Do you have to disconnect battery before you remove ecu?

It's not mentioned in the service manual so no.

Thanks so much to Vcyclenut for the video and to Cooter for his instructions (viewtopic.php?f=8&t=848). They were invaluable in getting my ECU off. I typically flail about when I have to deal with blind connectors, so here's two observations that would have sped my clumsy fingers along and may help others.

1) The connector releases are quite clear and tangible. When you get your fingers back to the connectors, you'll feel that in front of each connector is a square inset about 1/2" square. This is the release. Push hard on it.

2) When reinstalling the connectors, there was no way I could get my fingers behind them to push them in. As Cooter suggests, play around with the ECU until the connectors are slotted, and then keep pushing forward on the ECU and wiggling it until you hear 3 separate clicks.

I also say thanks for the video and instructions for the quick ECU removal, worked like a charm. My problem was reinstallation, with my large hands just could not get connectors on, after an hour of struggling and a few choice words I resorted to taking plastic off including nose fairing. Connectors very easy to connect but what a PIA!

Haha. Yea getting it back in sucked. I don’t have big hands but it was definitely a struggle to get all plugs in. Then close the clamp. I wasted an easy 25min on this. And got some good scratches on arms.

I had the side fairings off when I did mine since I was installing an exhaust as well and I think that helped. I think the instal took me maybe 5-10 minutes.
