First ride of 2019

Post by Snakes709 » Sun Mar 17, 2019 11:24 pm

Was gonna wait a couple more weeks until the snow melts, roads dry up ans get cleaned but couldnt resist. This exhaust is pretty loud when you open her up. Unfortunely my Drift camera picks up nothing but wind so I didnt fet any videos of the ride. Will try something next time I go out.

I am agog! And jealous. Way up in Edmonton, no less.

In New York State, the DPW's dispatch armies of salt trucks out every time a wee snowflake falls. Worse, every town is given an incentive to use as much salt as humanly possible each season. Annual salt allotments are based on the previous year's usage, so the more a town uses, the more the town gets next year. This means that the towns are desperate to salt as much as possible during the spring, when I'm hoping for the salt to get washed off before I go riding.

When I jump across the border to Pennsylvania, there's not as much salt, but down there they don't use sand. The DPW's actually use a small gravel aggregate that doesn't wash off the roads. I'll be hitting patches of it past the middle of summer.

Every time I catch myself whining about the heat (30 to 34 C) I have to remember you guys gotta sit and wait for the snow to melt... that would drive me bonkers!

I lived in NS most of my life and they use tons of salt there. Here they just throw sand/gravel down once cars compact the snow down into ice.

My wife suggested bringing are bikes, or at least hers to Florida while Travis fabs up a intercooler on my bike in TN. With the temps and humidity, i said no fucking way.

That was the attitude here when I was a kid: "We live in the North. It's winter. Deal with it." I miss that very much.

...whining continued...

I can deal with waiting for the snow to melt. We have a good season here and some great rides in any direction. What drives me bonkers are the warm spring days that I give up on riding because the roads are still white with salt. It makes me absolutely mental. We'll get some good rains in April and May that nearly clear the salt off, but then have a bit of a frost one night and all the DPW's go nuclear once more with the salt. Then, the cycle of waiting for good rains starts over. :-(

On Cape Cod we usually have milder winters and a longer season, but salt is still an issue.

My first ride, Saturday, was on my BMW. But I’m “allowed” to talk about it here because I rode to the Kawi dealer and put a deposit on an SE. ;-)
