free decent looking tail clean up that works with the bags

Post by vcyclenut » Thu Mar 07, 2019 2:41 pm

I was looking at removing the giant monstrosity of a rear fender from the bike and when I took it apart there is an inner cover that is part of the stock set up that actually works quite well.

to be 100% legal I still need to add a tail light though I doubt I would get pulled for it based off the location of the tag and there is room on the side to add some flush mounts or short stalks

first thing I did was mount the inner fender to the two forward holes in the tail section where the stock rear fender bolted to. I then marked the location of the back 2 holes on the new fender and drilled them to match

Then I cut the stock tag holder off of the original rear fender

I then used 2 of the stock bolts and some self locking nuts to bolt the tag holder to the new fender. I did not have to drill any holes there was already holes that worked perfectly to mount it

back in the tail section. I used the two stock bolts again with self locking nuts to hold the rearward most mounting points in place and used 2 slightly longer bolts for the forward mounting points. I put some spacers ( I used nuts) on the bolts so I could tighten everything down good and not crack the new plastic fender. I think it looks much better then stock and the bags fit without issue

I could have been a bit better with pictures but you wil get the idea once you take the stock one off

Looks good mate... the length of the "snout" is not so obvious until you either swap it out for a tail tidy.. or ingeniously do what you have done..:)

Very nice.

I am waiting for Motodynamic.com to come up with one of their LED units, and since we have 2 tail lights, they will work very nicely as turn signals, eliminating the need to attach separate ones to the tail tidy. Then I can use any non-luggage tail tidy/fender eliminator.

I'm not a fan of turn signals integrated into the tail light--I don't think they have as much visibility and we all know how cagers don't look out for motorcyclists and I want to make sure my turning intentions are seen.

WELL,

I think those tail lights blinking individually at eye level will be a lot more visible than a relatively small turn signal...

Plus, they make them blink Yellow, but stay red for brake and tail light...

The H2 SX turn signals are only slightly below the tail light so I see no difference there and they aren't that small. My point is that with minimal separation it's difficult to see whether they're blinking left or right from a distance. I've followed enough guys with turn signals integrated into the tail light to see this first hand. My FJR does have the tail light and turn signals integrated into a single light bar but the signals are separate and provide enough spacing. The law in Texas says that turn signals have to be separated as much as possible for this reason.

Just my opinion. I've never been a proponent of altering any safety equipment on a bike (except removing stickers :)).
