Inertia at 10k revs

Post by Bengarzy » Wed Dec 12, 2018 2:34 pm

Thought for today, the chain drive and epicyclic gear train driving the super charger at high revs has a lot of inertia thrashing round and round........ you then make an instant Q/S gear change and the supercharger and some of the planetary gear is doing close to 100,000 revs, it’s not a turbo so it is directly driven and can’t free wheel so these revs have to be lost in the blink of an eye to 80,000 revs........ it must have a one way clutch in the drive up to the S/C or things will break.
Seen lots of cutaways and tech drawings of the power unit but can’t see anything...... there must be one somewhere........
What an anarack eh 😂😂😂

why would this be any different then the cams being driven off a cam or for that matter anything else in the motor, think about how much piston speed must change in that blink. Its all quite mind boggling if you try to imagine all the forces going on with a simple ride around the block let alone a top end run to 190!!!

Well......camshafts run at half crank speed not 9+ times so not quite the same but I get your point......however most alternators that are belt driven on cars have a one way clutch built into the pulley for that exact reason, belt life is massively increased as that was the clutch in effect when revs changed dramatically, specially on DSG auto boxes.
