Somebody talk me out of it (or into it) - Carbon Fibre Rims

Post by 2HYPR » Wed Aug 01, 2018 12:02 pm

I went for a ride on a BMW HP4 Race - just OMG good - and I know I know our precious green machines are not the same level of OMG but they are also not 100 grand....but considering I am on a weight elimination slant at the moment with ordering the titanium zorst I need some internet validation (or common sense) before I hit the go button on some rims from these guys - BST

I had BSTs on the ZX14R I just sold. Lighter wheels are the single best and most transformative modification you can make to a motorcycle. It made my ZX14R feel like a ZX10R. Also, you will be able to recoup at least 60% of the value when you sell the bike. My wheels sold quickly. If you can afford it then go for it!

The CF wheels make a big difference. Rotobox wheels are lighter than the BSTs you have pictured by about half a pound each and appear to be better made. You will save about 3 pounds on the front and about 3.75 on the rear with Rotobox and a half a pound less on each wheel with the BST's.

I've got 7 spoke BSTs on a BMW R1200S and I've seen the Rotobox wheels in person. While the Rotobox wheels look much better in person, particularly on the bike and with tires mounted, the BST 7 spokes look worse than they do in pics. That's my opinion. Others may disagree.

I also put Sicom brakes on my Z1000SX, in addition to Dymag carbon wheels. 315mm Sicom discs as opposed to 300mm Kaw discs were worth an additional 2.75 pounds.

Dymag doesn't make a wheel for the H2. Brock's just confirmed wheel fitment for the H2 SX is the same as for the H2. They bolted a set up.

I am a dealer for both Rotobox and BST so if you decide to get either I would appreciate a chance to earn your business.

I just received the new dual spoke design from BST for my 1299. The tires are being swapped over today or tomorrow

I had BST's on my 2006 r1 and it was the single best mod ive ever made to a bike. It effects everything . Turn in is easier, the suspension feels better because it has less weight to deal with, the bike stops and accelerates better and did I mention they are amazing looking!!

I also have seen the rotobox in person on a customers H2 and they were equally beautiful.

Thor, I'm going by what Brocks posted. I've weighed BST's against forged wheels on a BMW R1200S and the CF wheels are definitely lighter.

I don't see how the H2 wheels could be the same weight. Can you post the link?

I suspect that they weighed wheels AND tires and were using different tires on each wheel which can make a big difference.

I had the S model wheels on my 1299 meaning they were forged aluminum instead of cast, and I am sure lighter then the stock wheels on the H2sx my new wheels are 1 lb 3 oz lighter on the front and 2 lb 5 oz lighter on the rear then my forged wheels

its not the static weight that is most important in the handling of the bike its the MOI or moment of inertia. The fact that almost all the weight is in the center of the wheel with the outer rim and spokes weighing almost nothing makes a bigger difference the static weight reduction would imply.

I wont get to ride my bike till Saturday to feel the difference

rotating weight is more important because it has to accelerate in two directions; linearly along the road and toward the center of the wheel (although it never gets there!).

Force=mass*acceleration

So it takes much more force to rotate and object and at the same time accelerate it linearly.

ok well i am not sure but i see with my own eyes, that yes carbon wheels are lighter but by 20 gr or so , i see a video in youtube. so one needs to be careful and know how much they lose by spending so much money if it's under a kg not worth it.
