Break In..Kawasaki vs. Yamaha

Post by gremlin » Thu Jun 21, 2018 12:56 am

I purchased a Kawasaki H2SX SE and a 2018 Yamaha MT-10. The break-in procedures are very different, yet both are 1000 cc 4 cylinder machines.

Kawasaki: Maximum engine speed is 4000 RPMs for the first 500 miles, then a maximum of 6000 RPMs for the next 500 miles. This is the same guideline used in every Kawasaki since I bought a 1982 KZ550, despite incredible technological improvements in metallurgy and machining over 36 years.

Yamaha: Avoid prolonged operation above 5900 RPMs for the first 600 miles, then avoid prolonged operation above 7100 RPMs up to 1000 miles.

Notice the difference in wording, the Yamaha allows revving beyond 5900 RPMs during break-in, just not prolonged. Yet Kawasaki won't
allow you to exceed 4K RPMs! The Yamaha allows for far easier break-in conditions: I can achieve 61 MPH in 4th gear at 5900 RPMs on the MT-10, vs 61 MPH on the H2SX SE at 4K RPMs in 6th gear. The Yamaha achieves 80 mph in 6th gear at 5900 RPMs, allowing me to keep up safely with traffic on interstates during initial break-in. Yamaha has a 50% higher redline for the first 500 miles vs Kawasaki (difference of 4k vs 6K), and even allows revving beyond 6K!

I'm curious to hear your insights on why such significantly different break-in procedures exist between Kawasaki and Yamaha.

This is very interesting. I assumed this was a breakin UNIQUE to H2 SX. Never your saying it's typical for all Kaw's.

Varying engine speed is always an important part of break in. I also occasionally exceed RPMs by 2000 from time to time on new bikes. It's almost impossible to keep this bike under 4000 RPM anyway.
