Hanging idle?
I've noticed, when engine is cold it idles rather high 1500-1700 rpms, then when temp gets around 152-156,it starts to idle at 1100, but when I stop for a light,it still hangs at around 1300?,and then slowly returns to 1100? The idle is fine when it's warm, but the "hanging",
Then slowly returning to a normal idle,is rather puzzling, and I wonder if this is just
normal for a supercharged engine?

I've also noticed this on mine.

Motorcycling is not, of itself, inherently dangerous. It is, however, extremely unforgiving of inattention, ignorance, incompetence, or stupidity

Re: Hanging idle?
Same, but its not just idling high, the range is large, if that makes sense, like 1000 to 1400 to 1000 ...etc a few times a second.

At a light in gear with the clutch pulled in mine sounds like a cammed muscle car. It bounces a little but is pretty smooth.

Yes, mine does that too.Drnick wrote: Mon May 07, 2018 8:58 pm ....when I stop for a light,it still hangs at around 1300?,and then slowly returns to 1100? The idle is fine when it's warm, but the "hanging",

It's amazing how fast you can go when you take your time.

Re: Hanging idle?
Sitting at a stoplight put it in neutral, then roll the bike forward with your feet. Tell me what happens to the idle speed.

It goes to a "normal idle"? @ 1100...so ,what's your diagnosis? Is the bike hauntedSXtreme wrote: Tue May 08, 2018 2:53 am Sitting at a stoplight put it in neutral, then roll the bike forward with your feet. Tell me what happens to the idle speed.

Re: Hanging idle?
When engine is cold my bike idles 2300-2400 rpm in the beginning (app. 1 min) before it gradually decreases until it is at 1100 rpm.
Anyone else experienced this? I mentioned this at the first service, but I was told it was normal.
It does not feel good to engage 1st gear when idling is so high, there is a BIG clunk from Neutral to 1st gear.....

Re: Hanging idle?
Yah, that's normal. It's an automatic/virtual choke system. Where you would normally have a fast idle lever on older bikes, this bike does it by the computer actuating the throttle plates slightly at startup when cold. You should let the bike idle until the RPMs drop down before riding off. I don't imagine it actually hurts the transmission, but giving the bike 1 minute to warm-up while it's stone cold is a good idea for the engine.
As for it hanging when coming to a stop, I assume it's for a couple of reasons. 1 would be related to the engine braking control, the other would be that the bike may have the tendency to stall naturally when coming to a stop and Kawasaki programmed it this way to prevent the stalling. This is quite common in cars, if you watch your tach when coming to a stop. The IAC motor stays out and then goes in to be sure that when coming to a stop after being under load, that you have a slightly high idle in favor of a stalled engine.
Overall, I wouldn't worry about it all. As long as it's not revving crazy on it's own or stalling, just let it do it's thing.
