Rear tire removal

Post by cOoTeR » Sun Apr 29, 2018 1:43 am

After my recent trip I'm due for a rear tire. With the single sided swingarm and center stand there's no reason not to take it off yourself and save a few bucks.

To loosen the rear lug nuts I had my son sit on the bike and hold the rear brake. I used a 1/2" drive ratchet with a 17mm socket to break them loose. After loosening them I put the bike on the center stand and took them the rest of the way off. There are washers behind the lug nuts so don't lose those. The tire slid off of the lugs easily but now is where I ran into an issue. I assumed the tire could be rotated to the right spot and would slide out. Either I was wrong or I couldn't find the sweet spot to get it to clear the lugs and the exhaust. So I came to the conclusion that the muffler (rear section) had to come off. So I removed the exhaust using a 10mm socket on the lower clamp and a 6mm allen wrench on the upper bolt. With those loosened and removed the pipe slipped right off. Then the tire came off easily as well.

If someone else finds the trick to removing the tire without pulling the exhaust please let me know.
