License Plate Melting

Post by KiwiKodi » Wed Apr 25, 2018 1:45 pm

Due to our legal requirements in the UK, the license plates are quite large. However, has anyone else had any issues with their plates starting to melt. Factory built SE, standard everything - but the plate is fading and beginning to warp. Demon Plates say the exhaust is too close to the plate but I measure it at just under 11 inches from exhaust to plate. My fear is that now I am unrestricted in rev range, that excessive heat may cause the plate to ignite???

Seems like the problem is more about the plastic plate than the exhaust. Aluminium plate fitted to the back of the license plate would distribute the heat much better than plastic.

Hollywood spends millions for effects like that!

BTW - the catalytic converter runs hot and will add quite a bit of heat output.

Yeah. If you're planning to replace all that stuff anyway that's certainly one solution. Be aware though that you'd have to replace the whole section from the collector including that big muffler box under the engine. I believe that's where the cat lives so just replacing the end can won't do it.

I'm guessing about the cat location so I could be wrong. Looking at it though, I assume the wide section immediately after the O2 sensor is a pre-cat followed by the catalytic converter in that muffler box.

It’d be a full system change if i were to go that far. Although I do fancy a deeper sounding can when they become available. Plate manufacturer is going to reprint and reduce the size by 40mm either side. They can’t explain it as they use the same material as 99% of the other printers.
