Little things (and the not so little)

Post by Barrel » Wed Apr 11, 2018 9:44 pm

Now that most of the bigger things have been covered in other topics, I thought a list of some of the smaller things that riders notice would be interesting.

Here's my list for starters:
1. My bike steers slightly/gently to the right. I have to counterbalance by leaning left when sat up with hands off bars (eg cruise control set). Its not caused by camber. Am thinking it has a slight RHS balance (or perhaps wheel misalignment) ? No panniers. Tyres still as new.
2. The panel holding the lock for seat is just plain flimsy, not in fitting with the quality kit on the rest of this masterpiece.
3. It would be nice to have a panel under the instrument panel to tidy up the view from the cockpit of the insides of fairing. Nothing ugly there but it could be made to look more finished. Might be left open for static cooling?
4. As with all bikes I've had, I wish they would plan the position of the underseat to make it usable for storage. Put electronics etc all to one side. Can't easily fit the fat (4 language) manual in there for a start.
5. A slight vibration around 3,500 to 4,000 rpm. Not troubling at all but I haven't seen anyone else mention this.
6. This one I cant work out. The Average mileage (consumption) reading jumps around after an engine restart even though the Av mileage has definitely not been Reset. If you do Reset it when static, the Av mpg shows for example 2.8 mpg before the bike has even moved. As I get more fillups I'll make a note and figure it out.... I hope.
7. Big thing - the bike generally - poise, handling, engine and so on. Well its just plain bloody brilliant :cheer:

Interested to hear more views or if anyone else has noticed these or other oddities ?

Mine steers slightly to the right as well. Camber makes no difference. Had the same with my S1000XR. Done 1700klm now and am extremely happy except for 1st & 2nd gear not engaging as smoothly as the rest of the gears.

I have not noticed any problems with steering, as a matter of fact I rode the bike without touching the handlebars for 20kms on cruise control and everything seemed fine.

No hands body lean left to compensate here also

I was, and continue to be, shocked by the violent jaring of going from N to 1st. My Triumphs never did that.

Motorcycling is not, of itself, inherently dangerous. It is, however, extremely unforgiving of inattention, ignorance, incompetence, or stupidity

I've not noticed any steering/lean bias. Neutral to 1st has a bit of a clunk, perhaps it will improve with miles. But it doesn't overly bother me.

The instantaneous fuel mileage works as expected, not sure about the avg yet. I need to play with it some more. It seems to vary a lot, when it should settle in at some point the longer you get away from when you last reset it.

Resetting things still has me confused. I need to peruse the manual again.

A lot of bikes will "cluck" some when going from N to 1st. Just the way a motorcycle transmission is designed. Everything is turning while in N, and even if the clutch lever is pulled there is still enough oil viscosity between the disengaged clutch plates to keep the transmission shafts rotating some, which caused the "clunk" when 1st gear engages. Doubt it will hurt anything, and there are rubber dampers in the rear sprocket assembly to reduce some of the shock.

I believe the clunk when going from N to 1st is a common by-product of the dog-ring gear engagement design in the gearbox. Other thing I noticed with this gear mechanism is how quick you can run up the gears with this design especially when coupled with the quickshifter. It can take gears quicker than I can supply them with my foot. Cant recall being able to do that on a fork-selector gearbox. No wonder they use them in racing :D

Well you can do it with a fork selector gearbox because the SX transmission still has a shift drum and selector forks. The difference is that the dogs are not part of the gear so the gears don't need to slide into place when changing gear. It's not so different but, I agree with you, it is sweet.

I think my biggest issue is how long the clutch lever moves before the clutch starts to grab and the bike starts moving starts moving. I'm going to try to adjust it too see if I can make it shorter.
