Quick shifter?

Post by ghostwriter78 » Sun Apr 08, 2018 5:15 pm

Turned on quick shifter KQS today after passing 1600km. Power F, KTRC3, KEBS normal.
- shifting from 2nd to 3rd and back feels like a horse is kicking the bike. Around 5-7k rpm. Anyone has same experience or tips?
- Once almost lost rear wheel, saved by KTRC and other integrated electric gizmos
- shifting up 3/4/5/6 is ok, but I’m sure I do a better job with clutch
- shifting down is sometimes a joke. I’m sure I can downshift better without KQS and not even using clutch

How I usually shift:
- very fast shifting lever movement up/down (not always fully pressing through)
- pulling clutch lever ca 20% quickly and releasing fast again
- minimal or no throttle movement unless situation requires it
- doesn’t feel jumpy or rocking

I realised that it works fine for both directions - no complains at all.

I'm assuming that you know that throttle has be totally off when doing downshifting with KQS!

I’ve found up is smooth - no issues. Down is good but you gotta make a point of pushing the throttle off each downshift.

Issue I have is when I choose to manually downshift, I habitually blip the throttle. What I’ve found is the bike will blip on top of mine making her surge forward during the change. I don’t like it but trying to work though it. Anyone else experience this?

Yeah. With QS on, I find you have to relearn how NOT to change gear in order to change gear
By that I mean;
Downshifting: You have to consciously close the throttle and try not to reopen, when for years you open the throttle a little more to match gear speed.
Upshifting: You have to be either in track-head mode and hold throttle open during shift - that works. Or in road-head mode you have to over-ride the urge to close the throttle to match gears.

I do find it is great when it works, and it is me that needs adjusting

Mine works perfectly.

How are you blipping the throttle and having it blip as well. When i pull the clutch in mine doesn't blip the throttle. If you have the throttle open at all the down shifter does not work.

If anyone is having trouble with the QS on this bike most likely they aren't using it properly or they aren't used to riding a powerful bike.

To make sure you're using it properly make sure the quick shifter is turned on, if you haven't your just smashing gears together.
For upshifts : Make sure you're in a high enough rpm, it'll cause your shift to be jerky if your not. Hold the throttle open steady, if you close it the quick shifter doesn't activate. Firmly pull up on the shifter like normal then release the shifter like normal.
For down shifts:
Make sure you're not in too high or too low of an rpm. Too close to redline and the quick shifter won't activate because it won't auto blip into the redline. To low of an rpm and the down shift will be jerky.
Do not use the clutch in either direction, the quick shifter is not made to work while the clutch is being used.

Guess it’s about timing. Personally if I am downshifting at any sort of speed I close the throttle, engage the clutch, blip and change. So if the throttle is closed when I pull in the clutch the bike blips milliseconds before I do. Gotta play around a bit more to figure it out - for me anyway. I have several bikes with up only. This is my first down.

When blipping the throttle i always twist the throttle as i press the shifter. The bike doesn't blip because the clutch is pushed in it blips when the shifter is pushed. If it's happening before you twist the throttle you're blipping on top of the bike.

The Quick Shifter doesn't work when the clutch is pulled in. This information is on page 187 of the owners manual. So the bike is not rev matching when the clutch is pulled in.

Closing the throttle to downshift makes no sense.. you have to increase rpm when downshifting, that means opening throttle a bit when using clutch.
True, using clutch with KQS doesnt do anything other than what clutch does by itself..

Main reason for using KQS is that i dont have to do anything when i press shift lever up / down as KQS turns off ignition for a ms.

- I sure enabled KQS, it shows on dash.
- Im in reasonable RPM range, not under 5k and not over 9k.
- The bike has a slipper clutch, so difference on downshift should be compensated.
- i might be on up/downhill while shifting and when downshifting may be also breaking slightly at same time
- there is no grinding of gears :) its clearly and cleanly shifting, but on 2nd/3rd its rocking the bike

you have to make sure the throttle is closed all the way on downshifts, or the effort is higher and not as smooth. I found that I was holding it open just a little so now I make sure its closed all the way and its very smooth with moderate effort.

on upshifts, to be smoothest be accelerating

my 1-2 sometimes is a little harsh if im at a low rpm's and not accelerating much. but that's to be expected

Yeah I found the same thing. Completely shut off the throttle to down shift and if you downshift too quick it can happen also. Upshifting is pretty smooth.
