Fuel Pump/Relay Issue

Post by swharton » Mon Oct 07, 2019 2:59 am

I wanted to see if anyone else has ever had this problem.

Rode the bike for 15 miles and parked for 10 minuets. Tried to start but noticed the fuel pump did not activate when the ignition was turned on, so the bike would not start. Tried turning the ignition off/on a few times, and cranking, no fuel pump activation. Bike was on the side stand.
Took the bike home via the truck and grabbed the RS and went for a ride.
Later in the day when I returned the H2 SE was cooled. I tried again and the fuel pump activated when the ignition was turned on and the bike started.
Rode the bike a few miles to get it hot, came home and let it sit to re-create the condition. Fuel pump activated and the bike started.
So I can't re-create the condition. I hate electrical Gremlins :bash: and don't want to replace anything until I can diagnose the issue.
I will visit the dealer just to see if any codes were stored, but no CE light came on.

Anyone else have this happen?

Thanks,

Spence

Some points to keep in mind while you diagnose the problem:

When you turn the ignition switch On, the fuel pump will not run with the kill switch in the Off position. Obviously, the Kill Switch can't be in the Off position while you're cranking, but then you wouldn't hear the fuel pump while cranking.

The sidestand is not part of the fuel pump circuit - a problem with the sidestand would prevent the starter from cranking.

I'm guessing that heat wasn't a factor and that might be why you weren't able to recreate the situation. Of course, you have to keep your mind open to all likely causes, but if you can identify heat as a factor then it's unlikely to be an electrical problem.

Turns out the fuel pump is defective. My local dealer helped get Kawasaki to warranty it, even though the bike was out of warranty by 4 months. Dodged the bullet on this one!

Glad to hear Kawi stood up and did the right thing! I still prefer the peace of mind of the extended warranty! :)
