Coolant low

Post by Fitz » Tue Sep 24, 2019 9:34 pm

I'm around 5 or 6000 miles. Was doing my own oil change. (fuck these clips etc, need to order some now from trying to get fairing off) Noticed my coolant is low. Have ridden a few more days and seems a smidge lower. So need to get filled before I do anything else. But curious is it normal to burn some off somehow, or do I have a leak?

I dont see spots in my garage that I've noticed. I do run it hard occasionally, 130mph spurts on highway, did 165 going to SLC a month ago. And normally commuting 80 miles a day doing 80-90 on the highway.

Have you disconnected any of the coolant hoses or pipes in the past? I had an issue where coolant was leaking when I put my coolant hose back on and had to put a steel clamp on it to get it to stop. Kinda odd but it fixed my issue.

And I ride routinely at 80-100 with at least two Bursts of 180-193. My coolant has not changed much at all. What is your running temp at when cruising at 65mph and what’s the outside temp. If I’m under 80mph and it’s not 95 outside I run 155 degrees. 160-165 if outside temp is hotter than hell.

I havn't.

Strangely enough at the dealer, level was in between the bars. Not sure if it expands a fair bit when hot or it's possible doing my work in the dusk near dark I just was seeing things. But I swear it was past the low mark as the resevoir curves away. So Going to have to check it tommorow cold again and see if I'm crazy.

Just ordered my Road 5's to replace my oem's that made it 7k miles. (A fair bit longer if I hadn't gone a month without checking air pressure and causing some excess wear).

For temps, 80-90 here, not sure how much higher altitude affects, spacing but kinda similiar temps, maybe a wee higher. I know if I go from highway to some slow traffic and a light I'm at 203 in no time flat usually as I'm parking.

It is normal for vehicle reservoir tank levels to rise or lower, depending on the running condition/heat of your engine system.

On your overflow reservoir tank there is a 'high' and low' mark. When you engine has cooled down completely, the reservoir tank will be at its' lowest. If the level is below the lower marking, add a bit to bring it at or a bit above the low mark.

If you look at the high mark in the reservoir tank, given that the radiator is full, and the reservoir tank is filled/leveled out appropriately, when your engine is hot and running normally, the high mark is the 'about' upper range of fluid that your overflow reservoir tank would show. So as you can view from the low to high mark on the reservoir tank, there is a bit of normal expansion. Make sure when the engine is fully cold, that the reservoir tank level, low level, is at the low marking. If not fill it to the marking, and then keep your eye on that for a period or time of riding days/weeks, to make sure it does not change.

just renewed my tyres to road 5's managed 3500 miles on the stock tyre , I may have got another 250 miles after that they would have been illegal , and I do check my tyre pressures 42 and 42 before every ride out . I have never rang its neck yet either , occasional high spirited riding , you have done well to get 7000 miles , anyone done more than that with the stock tyres I am expecting a lot more miles form the 5's , I put them on my 2017 sx and my 2015 bmw 1600 gt , no probs with them , thought I was riding on ice when I first picked the bike up with the new tyres on !!! but once you have a few miles on them they are brill!!
