New Bike, extreme heat!
New Bike, extreme heat!
Hello all,
Just bought a brand new 2018 SX SE a couple days ago. When I took it for a test ride, it was awesome!. I even commented that it had good air flow because it kinda felt like I had an air conditioned seat. ( I know is not, but felt like it)
Anyway I end up buying the bike. They took it back to do something to it to make sure it was ready to sale.
So didn't have a chance to ride it until today. Man! extreme heat coming from bike. I could feel heat radiating to my lower legs. My inner thigh were burning up and sweating cause they were touch the side of the tank (or just below, wherever they sit). and worst part is, it felt like I had a seat warmer on. So I ended up stopping at a friends to show off my new bike. While there, I took my seat off and the piece of metal in front of the bottom side of battery was burning hot to the touch.
I couldn't figure it out why it was so hot. I remember on my test ride the power the set to "M" and I had to switched it to "F". So I put it back to M to see it that will help. It didn't.
Just wondering if anyone else has this issue and if anything can be done about it?
Soo much heat was radiating out from bike, I almost not want tot ride it now.
Thanks

Can you take a picture of the part your talking about. Is out possible the battery or something is shorting out? Might be worth talking to the dealership about.

I find the heat management superb on this bike. Even in 90-100+ degree weather. Something seems wrong here. Like cOoTeR said, talk to your dealer.

Re: New Bike, extreme heat!
BST temp?
Coolant temp?
Ambient temp?
You probably aren’t checking them yet but we need to have those numbers to tell you if normal or not. E.g., 1000cc inline 4’s make heat, they feel hot. My BMW S1000rr was worse, the frame would get so hot as to burn you if not for leathers. The H2 SX SE has an unusual hot spot by your right leg/calf from the supercharger. Your bike is new, new smells, break-in, probably normal. Your test ride was probably a cold bike, shaded etc. Now it’s sitting in the sun, black seat, frame, engine. When it’s really hot, I prefer my KLR650, much less heat from 32 hp engine, less wind protection is welcome when hot. Just the way it is boss.

Also matters if you are crawling in traffic versus cruising in the open.

Re: New Bike, extreme heat!
I've never felt much heat on this bike. In fact, the heat management is quite good...the radiator is enormous and it has a secondary oil cooler. The fans do a good job keeping engine temp down when they run. And if the bike is hot, it doesn't take long for things to cool down once air starts moving through it.
This statement coming from a person who owned a Gen 1 FJR1300 which literally caused male infertility....well, not really, but the gas tank would get so hot you couldn't touch it.

I haven't noticed this bike to be any hotter than any other inline four I've had. Your description sounds strange ... if it persists I'd visit the dealer.

Re: New Bike, extreme heat!
Thanks. I did take note of a few things, engine temp was 158-161. outside temp was 83. I rode the evening and was dark when I got home. The bike came directly out of garage, it was not sitting in the sun. I was riding back roads, so no stop and go traffic. I have rode a lot of different bikes over the years and never felt heat like this.
If you take off the seat. and look at the battery, there is a metal piece below (kinda, the piece is toward the front of the bike from the battery. the battery is face backwards where the bottom of the battery is toward the front. ) but the seat itself got way hot too.
Ugh I guess I need to take it in, but I don't trust the mechanics at the dealer I got it from. they all look like they are still in high school. Need to find a dealer with a bit more seasoned mechanics.
Think of it, i never heard and fans come on either. but after a bit, my legs were sweating so bad, I just moved them out a bit and the wind hitting them cooled them down. lol

Re: New Bike, extreme heat!
At the end of ride, bike had 199 miles on it. But I wonder if they did something to it after the test ride and before I took it home. I didn't notice any heat at all on the test ride. The bike did get to full temp.
I might see if I can ride bike to work tomorrow. See what it feels like in the morning.
