Air Filter Bolts

Post by JMod45 » Thu Aug 01, 2019 8:37 pm

I pulled my sprint air filter this morning and cleaned it. When I went to put it back together, I noticed one of the 5mm short bolts was missing. I am typically very good at keeping up with bolts, my garage floor is painted, and I keep it clean, so even if I drop one, it is easy to find. I honestly don't think misplaced it, and am thinking it may not have been there when I started.

I took a picture and labeled it for reference:
Image

Bolts 1 and 2 are long. 3-6 are the same (technically 3 is different in the picture).

1-3 Were all in place when I started
4 requires moving plastic, so I remember that one.
5 was loose when I was taking it off, so I remember this one as well.
6 could have been missing when I started, I didn't notice when removing the cover.

I moved bolt 3 to the empty hole at 6, as 4-6 are sealing the clean side of the filter, and want that side correct. I found another bolt in my stockpile that had the same thread and similar length I put in the empty 3 spot as a filler.

What this all boils down to. Has anyone else experienced these bolts getting loose? Specifically 5 and 6 (might check these next time you have a 5mm allen wrench handy). They are almost directly above the drive chain, so if one falls off while riding, its not just going to get wedged in some cranny of the engine.

I hate having to order a $0.90 bolt and pay $7.95 shipping. I'll at least get a few more black bolts to make shipping hurt a little less.

Last time I cleaned my filter I noticed the bolt you labeled as #4 was loose. I'd say it was in there about finger tight. I just assumed I had forgot to tighten it down after tree prior cleaning.

Curious to know if there are any companies that actually make "Black Replacement Bolts" for our H2SX SE. Would like to swap out, not just the fairing bolts, but also some of the engine ones as well like the air box.

I really don't want to buy the "Ebay or Alibaba" aluminum bolts for the fairing if I don't have to.

Any suggestions?

Pro Bolt stocks various colours and types of bolt, all you will need is type, size, thread pitch and length.

Warning.Do NOT buy or use Chinese bolts.Including well-nut fasteners.Just when ya think it's snug,the tops shear off..completely.
I've always spray painted any factory bolt or screw 'sets' when removed .Let dry completely, then reinstall. They hold up fine.

Replaced my rear sprocket and the lock nuts are supposed to replaced. I reused 4 of them but one nut and bolt got fucked up. Waiting for new ones to come in (back ordered). Curious if i should order titanium ones. There is titanium studs for a cbr1000 that looks a little different then ours but looks like it will fit.

lol.I had the same thing happen with mine. It's all in the tightening.I managed to push one a bit too far.Thank God it still backed out.Had me worried for a minute. In the past I've just bought a set and called it good.I would trust up to three sprocket changes with one set of nuts. What's strange though about that one being bad..I wasn't actully cranking down on it when it stripped.Just tightening to how the others went in.It was weird. But what's even weirder. The stud threads were fine all the way in.Only the nut stripped out.Go figure that one...

imagine that the studs are made of a tougher material compared to the nuts, probably why Kawasaki stipulate new nuts but not studs when replacing a sprocket.

Nothing so complicated. They're locknuts that lose their locking bite after a few uses. Kawasaki are playing it safe by recommending new nuts each time.
