Intake filter housing drainage

Post by Snakes709 » Sun Jul 07, 2019 3:45 am

So im replacing my air intake tube with a carbon fiber one and noticed a shit load of oil in the housing. There is a small drainage hole but on the other end it has a cap on it. Anyone add a second catch can?

My intake is definitely wet with oil most of the time. I have considered a second catch can, but not installed one. I have just been emptying the small plug tube after every few hours of riding. It got this bad because the dealer overfilled the oil on the first service. After fixing the overfill, it still gets wet, but not nearly as bad as this:

Yea i let the dealer do my first service and they over filled the oil as well. I’m gonna keep an eye on it and if i see it filling up again ill add in a second catch can.

I'm planning on ordering one of the hoses with the little bottles and tubes that's attached to the other drain and put it on the opening with the tube.

My concern is how much of the oil is getting into the plenum and combustion chamber. That can be detrimental to an engine. The problem is that the crankcase vent where the oil is coming from goes directly into the air filter housing. So there isn't any room to put a catch can in between the vent and filter housing. There is a cross over crank case vent that goes from the transmission to the other side of the crank case. I might try tapping into that, adding a catch can and capping off the filter housing. But it'll take some down time to get it figured out.

Well from what i can tell, very little oil is getting past the air filter. Abit of the housing has some oil but the impeller blades and around the housing of the supercharger is dry. Dont think much, if any, is getting into the plenum/combustion chamber.

That being said, with that much oil being blasted onto the air filter, curious how that is going to effect performance.

You need to look at where the oil is getting into the housing. The oil cannot come from anywhere on front side of the filter unless someone is pouring it into the intake duct. The crank case vent is behind the filter on the supercharger side. If it's getting into the housing it's on both sides it just pools on the outside because that's the lower side of the housing when on the kickstand.

I know the crankcase is on the dry side. I just dont see how all the oil can be on the wet side and none on the dry where its coming in, especially if the bike is running and being sucked into the supercharger.

The frontside of my airbox is usually "wet", but the backside is normal much drier. The catch bottle drain only has a tiny amount of oil in, but the front "plugged" drain is always full of oil. I will be installing another bottle on the front side drain in place of the plug tube.

How is the oil getting in there then? I think it's a combination of the oil being a fine mist when it comes out of the crankcase vent. A good amount gets sucked into the engine the rest hits the sides and soaks into the filter material so it acts like the material in a catch can. The oil then drains down and ends up on the kickstand side. The outer side of the filter the oil sticks to the dirt along the walls. On the clean side of the filter there isn't any dirt for the oil to stick to so there is only a thin film stuck to the walls. The rest drains down to the low side of the box.

Yea i guess that makes sense. Wasnt saying you were wrong. Just couldnt see how so much oil ends up on the dirty side of the filter.
