Why no top case?

Dynamically the WORST place you can add weight to any motorcycle is high and behind the rear axle.

Where does a top case sit?

Aerodynamically, the WORST place you can add drag to on any motorcycle is high and behind the rear axle.

Where does a top case sit?

So having bought a motorcycle, at least in part, for it's fine handling and high speed abilities you now want to add weight and drag to the WORST place possible? That's your choice ... but … really?

Didn't ask for thoughts on the install. Simply posted for those considering. BTW I rode hard on the mountains with it yesterday and some how managed to keep tires down.

For what it's worth, I have a Kawi Versys 1k, which has the factory top case and side cases (identical to those on the H2). The other day when I was doing suspension setup on both bikes, I noticed how much more rear steel bracing the Versys has compared to the H2.

I'm sure many of you know this and I'm summing up what others have been saying but to those who do choose to go the top case route please be careful at triple digit speeds. Yamaha warns FJR1300 owners that you must avoid high speeds (I think they said over 85 mph) if you have side bags and a top case installed. I found the bike (the FJR) okay up to 120 mph. At 145 mph on the Trans Canada Highway the bike went into a tank slapper which scared the shit out of me. Fortunately I kept my wits about me and didn't fight it. Light touch on the bars as I rolled off throttle and it stabilized itself. Future experiments seemed to reveal the empty pocket of air between me and the top case seemed to be part of the problem and having cargo strapped in that area seemed to help. Every bike is different and things like the height of the rider and windshield will all be variables as to when and if the aerodynamics of a top case will get you into trouble. I think the general rule of thumb would be along Yamaha's warning- you're safe with side bags and a top case as long as you keep it under 85 mph. You probably would be fine up to 100 mph, but after that you could be taking a big risk IMHO.

I must be getting senile. I posted a similar comment in August of last year. Oh well, it's a good enough warning to be repeated.

I put one on for the missus to feel more comfortable and secure. It looks ugly but is so functional I’ve never owned a bike with one before and it’s so handy. Like having a boot. I can go to the shops and secure my helmet and jacket in it. I don’t use the panniers around town but I always have the top box on unless I’m going on a sports ride with mates I usually leave it at home.

Also I’ve had my bike up to 180 kph with the top box on with no issues. However no panniers.
