Five day rides are what the Harley guys do.CoolDaddyGroove wrote: ↑Sun Nov 03, 2019 12:13 amDo you camp? What do you pack? Heck, I can do a 5 day with an 18L dry bag.

Good one, but still doesn't answer the question "what does one pack that they need that much luggage?"

For some, they may feel that is the case. However, in over 40 years of motorcycling, riding up to 18k miles per year, commuting daily into the middle of citys, including London, doing 2 up touring holidays across Europe, I've never had the need for a top box.

What works for you doesn't work for everyone that's why manufacturers offer choices. My BMW K16GTLE and R12GS both have top boxes and provide enough extra storage space to carry and extra 3 or 4 days worth of stuff. A top case is a very useful accessory and doesn't hinder performance at least for me. I love having a top case but not sure I'll add one to my H2SXSE since the H2 is just a day bike for me and the panniers offer enough storage for day trips.

What extra crap do you carry if your trip lasts more than three or four days?
Top boxes don't look right on some bike imo.
Not too bad on a k16 as the box is in proportion to the rest of the oversized piece of unreliable Teutonic crap.
Might as well buy a car! Lol

Re: Why not a Top Case?
What you carry all depends on the person, if you're riding 2 up and the number of travel days you plan to ride. I carry a CPAP machine which takes up a lot of space, plus I have a small cooler for drinks and snacks. Other guys that camp will carry a tent, sleeping bag, stove in addition to clothing and other necessities.DarkFlow wrote: ↑Thu Nov 07, 2019 6:22 amWhat extra crap do you carry if your trip lasts more than three or four days?

I've owned 2 K16's and both have been 100% reliable and while heavy they are surprisingly nimble and quick. One day if you work hard you too can own a K16

Fast and nimble?!!
If you say so..
Never owned one, through choice due to several test rides.
This is what I like about my sx. It carries volumes of crap and leaves overweight k16s with their usually overweight owners for dust. Two up and solo.
The big K looks impressive though but too much show and not enough go.
Reliability?
The early ones were shite.
Well known fact.

Re: Why not a Top Case?
Well you just ought to be able to out run a K16 with a H2SX since the SX is built for speed and the K16 built for comfort and long distance touring. Besides speed isn't everyone's objective when riding so nobody cares how fast you can go or what bike you think you can out run.DarkFlow wrote: ↑Thu Nov 07, 2019 1:50 pmFast and nimble?!!

Re: Why not a Top Case?
The sx is marketed as a sports tourer, justifiably imo, so it's not built just for speed.
Nobody cares how fast? Lol
Try telling that to the legions of k and gs owners who just have to try and show how fast their pieces of Germanic posing crap are, after wafting past you without acknowledgement as bmw owners tend to,only to find you on their tail shortly after, then past them not much after that!
They seem to care then.
To no avail.
See them hogging the outside lane of European autoroutes every trip.
All good fun.

Re: Why not a Top Case?
You're obviously envious of K16's and GS's and while the H2SX is marketed as a sport touring bike it's actually more of a sport bike with panniers.DarkFlow wrote: ↑Fri Nov 08, 2019 7:24 pmThe sx is marketed as a sports tourer, justifiably imo, so it's not built just for speed.

Re: Why not a Top Case?
Envious?!
Oh,terribly.lol.
I owned several boxers in my formative years, including the original gs p-d.
The sx is too sit up and beg rider position wise to be compared to a sports bike.
More semi adventure position if anything.
But still virtually as capable an all day load carrying machine as more focused tourers but considerably more nimble. And then there's the extra power. It does it all.
