Murph's bar riser design update #3

Post by UFO » Sat Jun 29, 2019 12:13 am

Had to do some redesigning and more 3D printing to get the right bar riser around the front brake master cylinder. Space is very tight in the upper fairing region of this bike to design a simple plug and play riser.

- Clutch reservoir must clear fairing/windscreen at full right turn, while maximizing rise.
- Front Brake reservoir must clear fairing/windscreen at full left turn, while maximizing rise.
- Riser must not hit master cylinder on either side.
- Handlebars must not hit tank at full turn (both ways)
- Etc

But after several iterations, switching to a slightly curved design, and 3D prints I think I'm done and ready to send the CAD to Murphs for machining a prototype.

Same geometry applies. This is about as high as you can get with a plug and play riser setup like this.

~1.5" rise
~0.5" closer to rider
~0.4" shift of the bar outward

The ABM setup is not plug and play and requires significant hardware and hydraulic line changes to move the bars up and far out from under the fairing region.

Next I will send CAD to Murph, wait for machined protos. Now I will work on the bracket to shift the front brake hydraulic block upwards ~1.5" so no brake line changes are needed. Easy. You could just zip tie it to the lower triple tree like I have it now  but that's not ideal.

Good work. I'm not looking for bar risers but it's good to see others working out problems and coming up with neat solutions.

This looks really like a great solution.
I would have chosen this one instead of the AB-M solution as well (initially I was asking AB-M for a Multi Clip solution which comes close to what you have designed) if there was a chance to get an approval. But as this is not happening it does ´t make any sense for me.
The AB-M installation causes the loss of the bike approval which I had to be apply for after getting a TÜV report on the installation.

All in all not a big deal. A 100€ to spend for.

Basically it is the same with non-approved slip-ons. If they get you it gets complicated ...
A slip-on is easily replaced and they can ´t stop you from continue driving but with the handlebar raisers it is a complete different story. ... unfortunately

I wish I had the skills and equipment to design bar risers like you've done. I'm definitely interested when they become available for sale, any idea what you're going to ask for them.

Metal currently being cut for first functional prototypes. It's such a tight fit getting any rise and staying within the confines of the fairing...I'm a bit anxious to get them and check.

At full left/right turn there may be some slight touching with the edge of the windscreen frame. Not really a problem except when pushing your bike around the garage.

I'll keep people posted. This has been an excruciatingly slow process.... :bash:
