Checklists for 600 and 7200 Mile Servicing
Checklists I've made for the 600 and 7200 mile servicing:
600 Mile Checklist:
7200 Mile Checklist
My SX SE is now due for its 7,600 mi service, and I'm thinking about doing part or all of it myself because my shop is over an hour away, and because my ECU has been flashed. I have an extended warranty, so I'd like to keep up with the service schedule. I've already done the supercharger impeller axial play check, so that's out of the way. I have two questions:
1) Has anyone else done their own 7,600 mi check?
2) What experiences have riders had with their 7,600 mi checks? Prices paid? Actual work performed?
The reason why I ask is that looking at the checklist, I'm guessing that some dealers may skip things like the "engine vacuum sync." I know that my old dealer (now closed), skipped most of the checks on my Versys 1k.
================== UPDATE ==================
So I finished my own 7,600 mi check, and here's my observations:
1) It only takes about 3-4 hours if you skip the 4 items that require pulling the fuel tank. The supercharger impeller play is the most time consuming item. If you knock out the impeller play check when you clean your air filter, the inspection could be done in a couple of hours tops.
2) The items that require pulling the fuel tank (Fuel System, Evap. Control System, Air Suction System & Engine Vacuum Sync) seem pretty much non-critical and are much more trouble than they are worth. For example, the Engine Vacuum Sync doesn't seem to be so much as a sync as a check for a leak. The service manual pretty much states that the throttle body should be replaced if vacuum is not within spec. It should come as no surprise that the Kawi vacuum tool sells for $1,300. As for the Evap. Control Sys, the manual wants you to go through all the trouble of disconnecting and digging the canister out just to check for cracks.
3) I am absolutely certain that my dealer did not pull the tank as specified at the 600 mi check.
4) I'm guessing that most dealers only check the critical things like pads, brake function, etc. at the 600, 7,600, etc. checks. I'm guessing that decent dealerships check tightness of fittings listed on page 2-76 at the 600 mi check to make sure that everything is torqued after being broken in. Note that a short 10mm wrench allowed me to check lots of the fittings without having to pull fairings.
5) When we got these bikes, we discussed the disparity of cost for the 600 mi check, and I think I have an explanation. Guys paying the high end were prolly getting more or a full check. For the rest of us, the dealers were prolly checking the things they thought should be checked and were charging accordingly. I don't think this is so much malfeasance in most cases as much as it is reality. I know my dealer's shop is booked tight. I doubt the service manager wants to keep other customers waiting so he can pull the tank off my new SX SE, disconnect a bunch of hoses, and pull the evaporative canister out so he can verify that it has no cracks. My guess is that guys paying the high end for the 600 mi check had their bikes at shops with minimal backlogs of work.
6) The 600 mi check is very similar to the 7,600 mi check, so guys who want to do their own 600 mi check could prolly do so.
Lastly, other riders may not care as much about this as I do. My SX SE is under warranty until 2023. When I got my Versys 1k in 2015 (under warranty until 2021), the dealer informed me that I needed to follow the service intervals to maintain the warranty. I don't do a perfect job of it, but I do pretty well, and I document everything. It's not a bad discipline anyway, for someone like me who's very forgetful.

Re: 7,600 Mile Service: DIY? (with checklist)
Burmashave ,
I'm wondering if the dealer can void your warranty by you performing the service checks yourself, because you are not their certified service tech.
I have not needed a warranty issue on my past bikes, and I modified them and ECU'd them also.
Yes, I agree with you on the listed service items the shop is 'supposed' to cover.

Did you have the dealer do the checks at specified intervals?Prof J wrote: Sat Jun 15, 2019 2:08 am Burmashave ,

Well, I could of. I did my own basic stuff and never went back to the dealers.Burmashave wrote: Sat Jun 15, 2019 2:40 amDid you have the dealer do the checks at specified intervals?Prof J wrote: Sat Jun 15, 2019 2:08 am Burmashave ,

Take a look at the owner's manual, or download the pdf attached to my post above. It's 27 items.

How much did you pay for this “7600 mile check”?
Or I should ask, how much does the dealership charge?

I did the check myself. That's the point of the thread, so I don't know how much a dealer would charge. The dealer charged me $65 for the first service.

Is there a way to actually adjust vacuum sync or is a check of it the only thing you can do?
