Slight surging when fuel is low

Post by danham » Thu May 09, 2019 11:48 pm

Today for the first time I ran the gas tank down to the last bar. Not anywhere near empty; it only took about 3.5 gallons when I refueled.

But it felt like the engine experienced some slight surging when the fuel level was down that low. It went away once I filled up. It was pretty subtle: I pulled in the clutch and coasted in order to make sure it wasn't the road surface (which was fairly crummy). It happened at around 3k rpm in 2nd or 3rd in traffic, throttle barely open.

Anybody else experience this?

It's not a big issue; just curious as I learn this bike (I'm at about 640 miles now).

Not in my sx but experienced it in a car. Fuel pump was basically picking up dirt and shit that settles at the bottom of the tank.

Sounds like a contaminated gas tank.

My ZX12R had interesting behaviour on the last bar of fuel. If you nailed it in first/second gear all the fuel would rush to the back of the tank and the engine would cut out causing your rush of acceleration to suddenly decline ... which in turn causes the fuel to rush forward back to the fuel pump intake bringing the engine roaring back to life with great enthusiasm ...

My Evo did that with anything lower then half a tank If I take a hard left turn or floor it. Fuel pump was on the left side of the tank and no baffles in the tank. Multiple times at the track i would take a left turn and then the back stretch I would get fuel starvation.
