First service question

Post by danham » Wed May 08, 2019 10:54 am

Can anyone tell me what Kawi specifies must be done at the 600-mile service? Looking at the shop manual, I see oil & filter and various minor checks, plus chain tension. But my dealer says it will take a couple of hours. Just curious.

You’d be better off doing it yourself, and keep all receipts

I'm looking at the 600 as warranty insurance. I do plan to do most of the servicing myself.

As long as u keep records and receipts for simple maintenance your warranty will be fine.

Looking at the owner's manual, it looks to me as if it has to go in to a shop every 7.6k miles, unless you are willing to do and document all the listed checks yourself. Am I wrong about this? This is a pain for me because my local dealer has closed, and now my closest dealer is over an hour away.

On the other hand, when I had a local dealer, I took my Versys 1k in at all the scheduled intervals, but I have a very strong suspicion that the dealer only checked the obvious things (which I could do myself anyway), instead of checking all the specified maintenance items.

My dealership told me the warranty was void if the first service was not done by them. Idk about all that but I do know that if they performed first service and something goes wrong on what was back then a stock bike it would be on them and not me.

One thing required that they did on my SE plus for the first service was check the axial play on the super charger impeller. which involved removing most of the plastic on the left side of the bike. Added quite a bit of labor to the charge. Total was $348.

My dealer didn't want to go through the trouble of pulling the plastic at the 600 mi check, so they called Kawi and got an official dispensation to put it off until the air filter needed changing. As I'm cracking 5k miles now, I plan on doing it myself this week when I change the filter. As Kawi was totally O.K. with putting off the axial play check, you've got to wonder how critical it is at the 600 mi point.

I don’t know warranty rules/regulations outside the states, but in the states,as long as u keep records and receipts (and u don’t use a hammer to change the oil 😜) your warranty will stay intact, and as far as Kawasaki dealership saying warranty void if u don’t do 600 miles service ....read your warranty’s fine print

On the subject of first service and supercharger axial end play, has anyone seen or heard of a bike that exceeded the spec on the 600 mile check or any time after that?
