Panniers seem a bit rubbish

Post by Racer-X » Wed Apr 24, 2019 12:38 pm

Is it just me that thinks the standard panniers are a bit shit? I mean they're pretty and all but capacity is pitiful and the weird shape makes them even worse. Haven't used them in anger yet but I had 35L Givi panniers and a 45L top box on my triumph and even they were a bit small for me and the missus.

We go for 4 week trips on the bike and I'm struggling to see how these strap on lunchboxes are going to cut it. As nice as the mounting and one key system is I suspect I'll be ditching them in favour of an uglier and more cumbersome Givi set.

I have an identical set on my Versys 1k, and I've been very happy with them. They're not giant, but definitely big enough for my needs, nor would I want them to be larger. The Versys also has a top case, which I use for gear on camping excursions. I wouldn't be able to do the same on my SX SE because I'm not going to mount a top case.

By the bye, I like your handle, Racer-X. I grew up on Speed Racer and still watch it once in a while.

I used 40l throw overs last year. Full to bursting , at least 15kg in each with no problems. They simply swung underneath. Kept the c of g low as well. This year used the factory panniers, no problems again but not quite as big. Still managed a fortnight's two up camping abroad with them. I cut down on the amount of clothing and tie down/bungee strapped everything in the panniers tight to get it all in. A 40l tank bag and the wife with a small back pack works for me.
Bit more thought needed with the factory panniers admittedly.

I agree they fall short of the V35s I have on my Sprint ST. But, they're really not bad. At least they're water tight. And they do come off, and on, simply.

interesting ... do you guys use them with the inner bags?

@burmashave I've used this handle for many years on forums. I tend to lurk more than post but you know ... I just got the new bike and I'm excited :D

As for the liners, I use them for packing clothes on trips. For regular riding, I ride with pouches/organizers in the cases to keep small stuff from rattling around. See this post:

I can live with them. They don't leak water, they are keyed to my ignition, my helmets fit, you can pack a week or two of stuff (supplement with a rear seat bag and/or tank bag), certainly not a MONTH of stuff tho, I can go pick up some groceries with them,

But the Givi are too fugly (for this bike) just for a little extra space.

Now, you want rubbish panniers? Buy a Ducati. My mulistrada bags were un-symmetric due to exhaust, leaked water because the clamshells wouldn't close and seal properly, were loose on the bike, etc.

I love the stock panniers! Never a single issue with them and I take them off the bike routinely, and they always go off and back on without a hitch. Not the most glamorous but I find them to be very useful.
Just my two cents.

I use one liner to pack cloths in for trips. The rest I pack normally.

I think the V35s could be a handsome bag on the bike. But, the mounting kit would look terrible, compared to the Kawi setup.
