Forced air intake

Post by Bengarzy » Thu Apr 11, 2019 2:57 pm

Just checking round to see if there was anything obvious like a crisp packet in the air intake from the fairing nose with a torch........ I could see at least 5 3/4” holes in the side of it about 10” from the intake grill.
Anyone tried taping these up and see what happens because Kawasaki make horse power claims regarding the pressure created with “forced intake” but then leak it all away half way to the filter. I expect it is in case the odd crisp packet did make its way into said intake grill and instantly choke off the motor.

No one has come back to me re poor torque below 6k compared to normally aspirated 1000cc 4 cylinders so mine must have a fault..... I hope so as I wanted supercharged grunt all the way and it is far from that.......service next week then a quick dyno run to compare if not sorted.

I believe the whole is there to increase the chirp sound, cant imagine its leaking off any boost, I did not see any restrictors in the intake tract,

I for sure don't feel like mine has poor torque below 6k as it makes my 1299 feel weak, but I rode mine unflashed home from the dealer and that was it so I cant comment on how it was stock

This was just discussed on the h2 forums. Its mainly for if something gets caught up in your grill that it wont cut the air flow which could be extreamly bad for the supercharger. When riding, it doesnt let air out and only lets in air if the tube loses pressure from the inlet grill area.

My understanding was that it was for enhanced "Chirp" for the rider, read that somewhere.

These holes are pre the supercharger from the front of the fairing, like snakes says it’s just to give a second inlet in case a blockage in the fairing nose

I had a 1299 Panigale last year, no comparison to my H2 SX, the Ducati had a huge amount more everywhere than the H2 so the Kawasaki def has a big problem as it feels like it is in a low power mode but isn’t....... dealers next week for investigation......thanks for the comparison..... feel better now😂

Some physics primers...

Pressure differential causes fluid (air) to flow. And analogously a fluid that is moving fast is at a lower state of pressure than more stagnant air. The SC inlet is basically causing a vacuum (low pressure zone) which sucks the air in.

The air at the 3 holes is the most stagnant (highest pressure) in the air path because it's hidden under the fairing. Absolutely zero air is "leaking" out these holes, it's just another path where air is being sucked into the intake tube by the low pressure zone at the SC inlet where the air is moving extremely fast and is thus at a much lower pressure (Bernoilli's principle).

I suspect these three holes have zero impact on performance but does allow the SC chirp to be heard better.

Keep in mind the Panigale probably weighs 150 lbs less than the SX. Their power numbers aren't significantly different, but their weights are massively different. Go ride a Panigale with another human strapped to the back and then compare it to the SX. You can't get around Newton's laws.

However, as I have had many four cylinder bikes since 1987 I do have an idea how they go, the H2 has poor roll on torque than any thing else I have ridden, no one on hear is dissapointed with there’s and all roll on comparisons I have seen favour the H2 apart from Hyabusa’s and Kawasaki’s own 1400, there is absolutely no chirp or noise of any sort to indicate a bov releasing excess pressure at any revs on the over run and I can only assume that I have A, a leak of boost or the valve is wide open losing boost all the time........ my boost gauge does not show much more than 50% at any time and from studying vids of the gauges on test bikes and all the noises they make my bike is totally different and feels slow until over 6500 revs are reached, not going to trouble the traction control on the exit if below those revs even on the lowest setting.
Anyone know what actualy controls the bov? Is it electronic with a solenoid or just sprung against a set pressure?

The Panigale was just one reference point, not had a 4 cylinder that is so lack luster under 6k pretty much forever, if they all ride like this (I’m sure they don’t) then there would be no point in the supercharger.
As I type this the H2 is in the dealers..... I’m hoping for a miracle but think it will be a “re book it” response.

My 2012 zx10r was a turd under 6k rpms everyone that rode it agreed that it had to be ridden like a 600 and keep the rpms up.

I don't remember riding the H2 SX in stock form or keeping it under 6,000 rpms much. But I do remember it being deceptively fast because it was so smooth. Have you done any thing to test or measure the acceleration to see if it actually is down on power? I know even in 6th I can just twist the throttle and pass people without needing to down shift.
