Top end noise

Post by Sprankles » Thu Feb 22, 2024 9:57 pm

Hello all, this is my first post here and I was hoping for an answer or anyone else who might have had the issue I’m troubleshooting.

Purchased my 2018 SX SE with only 6200 miles. Has all of the recalls complied with. I purchased it with the engine noise for a price that made sense just in case it was something catastrophic. I am mostly mechanically adept and don’t mind taking on large jobs if it means I get to have a sweet bike at the end of it.

The noise itself on a cold start sounds like a run of the mill bad CCT and then gives way to a rhythmic knocking noise. The bike does not feel down on power in any way and the noise does NOT occur on an engine braking deceleration. My first thought was that the CCT was failed so immediately purchased and installed n APE manual CCT which made no difference in the noise at all. I have not had a true cold/no oil pressure start since installing the new part but given the running noise is the same it stands to reason the cold start noise would also be the same.

Got any videos of it? The superchargers chain and chain tensioner do make noise as well.

I don’t see an option to upload a video. Is there a preferred route to do that? I do have a video though

I normally upload via youtube and just post the link to the video

Here is a video upload to YouTube of the noise. This is a true dead cold start and in this start the very initial rattling (CCT) is not here since it now has an APE manual cam chain tensioner installed. I’ve seen several people complain here and on the H2 forum about crappy chains kinking and binding.

Barring any phenomenal advice that fixed the issue I will begin the teardown to check valve clearances and then inspect the timing chain/guides.

You're right, that noise is not just a typical start up sound. Have you been able to isolate it to get some idea of exactly where it coming from or does it just resonate through the whole engine?

It's amazing how fast you can go when you take your time.

Does it quiet down at all when warm? Any chance its an exhaust leak? Is the manaul cct set correctly?

It does not change one way or the other with heat in the engine.

I’ve tried it with varying tensions on the tensioner with zero change in the sound. Thomas Kawasaki (local dealer) says to check the valve clearances next so that’s where I’m headed. While I’m there I will go ahead and remove entirely the chain and see what condition it’s in. If it’s bad then I may buy H2R cams for the other bike and take the stock H2 cams for this one while they are out. Can easily sell the wife on that…right?!

As the valves/valve seats wear down they get tighter and quieter. Check for exhaust leaks around the head.

Oh no way. That aint cool.I did notice a VERY slight change in pitch(lower and a bit muffled once it warmed)(I'm thinking it did) at the headers.I'm goin with pipe leak. And you tried to loosen the ape and tighten it?(with motor running). If it's something with tension, the ape WILL stop any slap.Long as the chain and shoe are okay.
