ECU Removal in 30 minutes or less

Post by cOoTeR » Thu Dec 06, 2018 10:05 pm

Many have found removing the ECU to be a pain in the butt and time consuming when doing it "by the book". But there is an easier way. My tuner had the bench harness for ECU tuning so we didn't need to install the extra pin in the wiring harness. That ment that every time he changed the map during the tuning process he had to pull the ECU out then plug it back in. So I learned this method by watching him and tried it myself today.

Before you start don't try to blame me if it doesn't work for you or you damage your bike. Do this at your own risk yada yada.

Tools you'll need 1) 4mm hex key and maybe a skinny flat head screw driver.

Step one remove the black piece that sits above the right side fairing. It was 5 fairing bolts and a push pin.

Step two remove the two bolts on the back side of the clam shell that holds the ECU and open it up enough to pull the ECU towards the rear of the bike a little.

Step three remove the three wire harness connectors from the front of the ECU and the rubber housing around the ECU. The sooner you can get the rubber housing off the ECU the more room you'll have to undo the plugs. (I didn't realize that the rubber housing can be removed before unplugging the connectors until I had already removed the first two connectors). To remove the rubber piece I grabbed the sides of it with my first 2 fingers and my thumbs on the ECU on the other side. Then I peeled it back with my fingers while pushing the ECU forward with my thumbs. The clips for the plugs are on the left side, towards the center of the bike. To release them use one finger push the clip open. If you can fit your other hand in there pull the plug away from the ECU. If you can't fit your hand in there you can use the flat head screw driver to push them off. The top plug I used the screw driver. The middle one I was able to pull off with 1 finger from each hand. The bottom one I was able to release the clip with my left hand and pull the plug with my right hand by reaching under the ECU and pushing it loose.

Step 4 remove the ECU.

To reinstall I put the ECU into the clam shell and pushed the plugs on starting from the bottom. After plugging the ECU back in I pushed the rubber housing back on. Then bolted the clam shell back together.

Thanks, cOoTeR! That surely is a lot simpler than removing all the fairings that the shop manual method states.
