Valve clearance questions

Post by danham » Tue Jun 21, 2022 11:51 am

I’m interested in learning how much adjustment is needed at the major 15,000 mile service. Does anyone have info from their own work or the dealer about how far out the valves were when checked during that service? Tight or loose? Intake vs exhaust.

Just curious, but also debating whether to do my own. I’m thinking winter project. It’s not that the job of getting at them and measuring bothers me. It’s that unlike the dealer I don’t have an assortment of shims on hand and the dealer is 45 miles away.

Who here has done it themselves and do you have any suggestions?

Thanks!

I haven't done a H2 yet but have done ZX14's, ZX10's in the past, I measure each valve clearance before removing the cams, make a note of each one, then lift cams and buckets and measure shims, in most cases shims can be swapped to another position to get the required clearance and then order the shims you are short of. My local dealer has most on the shelf. I usually find 4 is about what you need to order. In most cases out of 16 valves you only need to make adjustments with 8-10 with a combination of moving shims to another position or a new shim.

Growing old but making the most of it.

Thanks! Sounds a lot like the procedure I’m used to from when I worked as a Porsche/Audi tech years ago. I still have a container full of assorted Audi shims, but they are not going to do me any good on the H2. :) Those shims are marked for thickness, but as they are used, I always used to mic them to verify. I assume same for the H2 if I am going to swap positions.

I have see. alot of people posting their results of their clearance inspecting at 15000mi/24000km’s and the valves were in spec. I did mine myself and all the exhaust valves were out, intakes were in but at the bottom limit of in spec so i changed them as well. Easy to do but time consuming, also easy to screw your motor up. So take your time if you are doing it yourself and triple check everything.

Snakes, can you be more specific about things that could screw up the motor? I assume you mean getting cam timing wrong or having the cam chain come off its lower sprocket or stuff like that. Am I right?

Gotta check your clearance at room temp, to cold or hot will give incorrect measurements. Timing is key when putting it back together. Before you pull it apart, use a paint marker to to mark the chain link and cam sprocket tooth. Makes things alot easier when going back together. When i take the cams out, i zip tie the chain to something near the frame to keep it taught so it wont come off the crank sprocket as well as when i get the cams back in, keep the chain between the 2 cams taught as well. Sometimes when you tighten down the cam caps, once you tighten down enough, the chain might jump a tooth. I zip tie the chain on the cam sprockets to avoid this issue.

Check your math 3 times, dont mix up the intake and exhaust measurements when you write them down like i did my first time doing this on my zx6r. When you find out what shims you need, sometimes kawasaki doesnt have that specific shim, so go down a shim size, this will open the clearance more but as the valves/valve seats wear, the clearance will get tighter.

Snakes, excellent advice, Many thanks. I was planning to follow the old rule of putting the engine on #1 TDC overlap and looking for cam marks or creating some before removing cams.

There is marks on the cam sprockets but they are hard to see at times. Thats why i just use a paint marker, makes it alot easier to line everything up and then just count the amount of pins on the chain.
