Alpha gel vibration dampner

Post by Prof J » Mon Oct 28, 2019 8:33 pm

I recently mounted a GoPro cam on a modified front left slider. Initially the video was just about useless as the frame vibration was too intense and rapid to make 'filming' quality reasonable.

I looked around for a solution, other than moving the location. Eventually I came across what appeared to be an interesting silicone type of material, aGel (Alpha).

I decided to track down a small piece of the tape. You can see the tape in the first video, when it first starts up.

So I went on an all day ride on country roads and unpaved, rock and mountain dirt roads last week. I wished I had saved my initial, vibration filled video from a month ago, as a comparison, but I tell you, the difference is significant. Currently I'm looking for 'sheets' and bushings of the material for other projects, where in the past I've used rubber, traditional silicone for dampening large, industrial equipment.

Useful info. I don't have an immediate need for av material but it looks like useful stuff so I'll file away somewhere in my head for recall when a need arises. Thanks for posting.

Just curious, what GoPro are you using? I have a 7 and it absorbs basically everything, coming out silky smooth. The 8 is even better supposedly.

Well the GoPro 8 arrived just after I took the bike and GoPro 4 for another day/night ride through Oregon mountain crest dirt and logging roads, pot-holed in places, branches here and there, rocks and gravel, a few washouts.

The videos were smooooth.

I may try out the 8, but the 4 is doing so well, I don't 'need' the 8.
