Ice Warning

Post by Burmashave » Thu Oct 18, 2018 9:58 pm

Well, this is a new one -- my SX SE gave me a warning about possible icing while I was out for a ride in the cool temps today. When the temps dropped below 38F, I got a big yellow "ICE" notice where the lean angle normally shows. It's kinda silly. I'm riding. I know how cold it is and am fully aware of potential icing. I would have taken a picture of the warning, but I don't stop when I'm riding, and I figured I'd let others experience it for themselves.

At 37F on a sunny afternoon with low humidity in the Fall, ice is extremely unlikely here, but that didn't stop our wonderful DPW departments from salting one of our state highways. I ride each season until they salt the roads. My running beef with the DPW is that in NY, the local road departments are given an incentive to salt as much and as often as possible. In the Spring, I don't ride until the salt has been washed off the road, and the problem is that each time the salt gets washed off by a good rain, the local DPW's find an excuse to salt them again. It's absolutely nuts.

You can thank the lawyers for those ice warnings in your display. I'm seeing them more and more on new cars as well.

Ahh, the joys of living in upstate NY--I had my share of that when I was going to school at RPI in Troy many moons ago.

Home of Uncle Sam. I know it well. I went to school at Albany State many moons ago. I'm now close to PA in the Souther Tier. We have great roads (Catskills, Endless Mountains, Finger Lakes & rolling hills), but lousy weather.

I rode mine the other day up in the mountains it dropped down to 36°F with damp roads and the ice warning didn't come on. I wonder if mine works? I even saw a little snow on the side of the road.

Mebbe I had hit a colder patch previously, but when I noticed the warning, the temp showed as 37F. It disappeared once I hit warmer temps in the valley (38-40F), but interestingly, didn't come back on during the return trip up the hills.

Rode to Frankfurt in the evening (Business appointment tomorrow) and crossed the Westerwald on the autobahn. Temperature dropped slowly from 5 -> 3 Degrees Centigrade. When it reached 2°C the big ICE Warning came on. Pushing a button (It was dark and I can't remember which one) the ICE warning wen away and I could see all the information covered by it plus a little yellow 2 with a snowflake top right of that area.

really wish the buttons on the left handle were illuminated. The button for heated grips it, but way to bright and a little annoying

For me, pushing the middle button (the one that cycles the top display from odo, trip, lean, etc.) removes the ice warning from the top of the display. Once the warning is dismissed, the temp display (if shown) is marked with a snowflake.

Thanks, Burmashave!
This is what it looks like after pressing the middle button.

Gosh, there was a zero in the display for long stretches on the Autobahn, when leaving Frankfurt in the early morning where you now see a 2!
